A sun-drenched country, quietly short on the "sunshine vitamin"
India does not lack for sunlight. And yet, when Indians actually test their vitamin D, a striking share come back low. Recent population data put deficiency somewhere in the range of four to eight adults in every ten, depending on the city and the season. For a nutrient the body is designed to make from sunshine, that is a genuine paradox — and understanding why it happens is the first step to fixing it.
This is not about willpower or "getting more sun." It is about a handful of very ordinary features of modern Indian life quietly conspiring against a single vitamin.
Why sunshine isn't reaching the mark
- Melanin is sunscreen you are born with. Deeper skin tones — the norm across India — need considerably longer sun exposure to make the same amount of vitamin D as lighter skin. What counts as "plenty of sun" for one person is not enough for another.
- We live and work indoors. Office hours, screens, commutes in covered vehicles, and the sensible instinct to avoid the harsh midday sun all cut the window when UV-B is actually strong enough to trigger vitamin D synthesis.
- Cover, pollution and sunscreen all filter UV-B. Clothing that covers most of the skin, the haze of urban air pollution, and (rightly used) sunscreen each reduce the specific rays the skin needs.
- Diet offers little backup. Very few foods carry meaningful vitamin D, and the traditional Indian plate — largely vegetarian for many — is not a rich source. When the skin falls short, the plate rarely rescues it.
- Age reduces the yield. The skin's ability to manufacture vitamin D declines with age, just as bones and muscles need it most.

Why it matters more than people assume
Vitamin D is often filed under "bones," and bone is indeed central — it is what allows the gut to absorb calcium in the first place. But the receptors for vitamin D sit in tissues throughout the body, which is why low status is associated with a broader set of everyday complaints:
- Persistent tiredness and low energy that sleep does not fully explain.
- Vague bone and muscle aches, low-back or hip discomfort, and muscle weakness.
- More frequent minor infections — vitamin D plays a role in normal immune function.
- Low mood, particularly through darker or more indoor stretches of the year.
None of these is proof of deficiency on its own — they have many causes. But taken together, in a population where deficiency is this common, they are a reasonable prompt to check.
The single most useful step: get a blood test (25-hydroxy-vitamin D). It turns guesswork into a number, tells you whether you actually need to supplement, and — repeated later — shows whether what you are doing is working. Guessing is exactly how a deficiency stays hidden for years.
Who is most likely to be running low
- Indoor professionals — long desk hours, little daytime sun.
- Adults over forty, in whom skin synthesis and bone reserves both decline.
- Those who cover up for cultural, occupational or sun-safety reasons.
- People with deeper skin tones living at higher latitudes or through long cloudy/winter months.
- Pregnant and post-menopausal women, and anyone with digestive conditions that affect fat absorption (vitamin D is fat-soluble).
Be clear, though, about the limits of self-diagnosis: sudden severe bone pain, unexplained weakness, or falls are matters for a doctor, not a supplement shelf.
Closing the gap sensibly
The fix is rarely dramatic. Sensible sun exposure where practical, the few vitamin-D-bearing foods (fatty fish, egg yolk, fortified products), and — where a test confirms a gap — a daily vitamin D3 supplement are the usual levers. One detail worth knowing before you buy: what vitamin D does with the calcium it helps you absorb depends on another fat-soluble vitamin, K2 — which is why the two increasingly appear together on the same label.
